News from the Finnish Seamen's Mission
Mead for the 1st of May
Now you can order home made mead for your celebrations on the 1st of May at the price of € 3,50/litre in own bottles/vessels. Please contact Katja, katja.honkala(at)merimieskirkko.fi or +32 2 2800498. Available only on order. Deliveries will start on 26.4. after which you can come with your bottles to pick up your order.
Mothers' Day
The traditional Mothers' Day concert will be organised on Sun 8.5. at 14 at the vicarage. Children and youth are invited to come and perform at the concert, pre-registration is required. All interested performers should contact Ritva Latvala by 2.5. at the latest, ritva.latvala(at)telenet.be. Further details from Ritva at +32 476 312203. Coffee with cake on sale in the cafeteria.
Eeva's sauna
Discussion group Eeva's sauna will meet on Thu 12.5. at 18.30.
Flea market
A flea market will be arranged at the vicarage on Sat 14.5. at 13–17. Reserve a table and come to sell your unnecessary clothes and small items – or just come and find a bargain. Rent for the table € 10, reservations: katja.honkala(at)merimieskirkko.fi or in the cafeteria. Finnish summer vegetable soup (kesäkeitto) available in the cafeteria (7 €).
Two languages, two cultures
The seminar "Two languages, two cultures" will be organised for all interested at the Finnish Seamen's Mission in Rotterdam on Sat 14.5. at 12–18. Registrations via: www.lauantaikoulu.nl. The seminar will be held in Finnish/English.
Kajaani Male Choir
The Kajaani Male Choir gives a concert at the vicarage on Mon 16.5. at 18. Free entry. The repertoire of the choir consists of traditional male choir songs, spirituals and light music.

Media pastor Mikko Salmi in concert
Media pastor Mikko Salmi will play guitar and sing songs at the Chapelle de la Résurrection on Sat 28.5. at 18. Free entry, all welcome.

Art exhibitions
The art exhibition in April, "Fruit of Paradise" by artists Eeva Aaltio–Lumivuori and Eeva Rousku, will take place on 5.–30.4.

The sauna evenings continue: "Ukkosauna" (men's sauna) on the first Wednesday of each month at 19–20.30 and ladies' sauna on the last Thursday of each month at 19–21.

The Seamen's Mission in Brussels will have summer opening hours as follows:

The Seamen's Mission in Antwerp will remain at your service throughout the summer, following the usual opening hours.

New property
The Finnish Seamen's Mission has bought a property in Brussels and its renovation will start in April/May. The vicarage will move to its new, own property at the latest in January 2012.
Work of the Finnish Seamen's Mission in Benelux countries
Jarmo Karjalainen is the Director of the Finnish Seamen's Mission in Benelux since January 2012. The Seamen's Missions in the Netherlands and in Belgium were merged under one leader. All existing offices and organisations continue as usual but now work can be better divided between the employees in the area. In Belgium this meant the changing of a director's post in Brussels to a port responsible's post in Antwerp while the Antwerpbased port chaplain was moved to operate from Brussels. In the future the new director Jarmo will be present in Belgium on several days each week. Also in Luxembourg there was a change when a new priest, Wille Westerholm, started working for the Seamen's Mission.
New periodical
The periodicals Johtoloisto in the Netherlands and Kirkkoset in Belgium have been merged. The new periodical, Majakka (Lighthouse), will be issued quarterly with the number of copies doubled to 3000. The periodical will continue to be free of charge and it will be distributed to – wholly or partly – Finnish households in Benelux countries. Finding a Finnish au pair became harder after the service at www.mol.fi was closed down. Sari Negus (Guildford, England) has set up a new website www.finnaupair.com to fill in the gap and to help Finnish families in search for an au pair – or au pairs in search for a family – to find each other.
On the website both families and au pair candidates can have their advertisement free of charge by sending it to info(at)finnaupair.com.
